hello kitty's 35!
First launched in 1974, Hello Kitty is an unbelievable 35 years old! The iconic white cat with the red bow has become one of the most licensed products in the world since her birth, and she’s not planning on stopping any time soon.To commemorate the occasion, Sanrio have launched Three Apples – an exhibition and celebration of all things Hello Kitty.
“Hello Kitty has graced everything from coin purses, erasers, and gum, to toasters, couture, and diamond jewelry. She has long been a muse to artists & designers worldwide and has brought smiles to fans 35 years. Now, in honor of her 35th Anniversary celebration, Sanrio is proud to bring an event to the U.S. like nothing America has seen before!”
Alongside the event, designers across the world have been asked to contribute to the already astounding Hello Kitty collection. You can get Sigg waterbottles, Tokidoki wallets, bags and vinyl toys, and Asics sneakers – all adorned with the all-too-familar kitty.
And on the off-chance you’re a fan, there’s a Hello Kitty theme park too.

I was surprised last night to find out Tim Burton has a new movie - that I knew nothing about! It's set for release on 9 September 09 - 9/9/09 - and is called... wait for it... 9.
Having spent today quickly finding out all I can about it (being the Tim Burton fan that I am), 9 looks to be a very dark (like you expected anything else?) new adventure in to animation for Burton. But very dark. The story centres around a group of sentient ragdolls made of burlap who live in an almost post-apocalyptic version of Earth. Or rather the post global warming world Al Gore has been warning us of. It's colourless, bleak and deserted... almost.
A ragtag little group of ragdolls, desperately wanting to survive see a potential leader in one of their own, and look to him for their survival. His name is 9.
The story is based on a short film of the same name by Shane Acker.
The trailer looks a little something like War of the Worlds - explosions, aliens, big spindly scary legs and whispered one-liners - but all done with animation. Even the bed music sounds like a big-budget action movie rather than an artsy animation. You decide:

gloomy bear
Gloomy Bear is unlike any character to come out of Japan you may have seen before. He's cute, he's pink, and he's attacked and maimed his owner :ol
He's so bizarre. He's so cute and cuddly, and yet dangerous and crazy-like. In this cartoon, Pity (the little boy) dreams of all the things he's going to do with his new favourite pet, Gloomy. But Gloomy's reaction is anything but cute and cuddly - he knees Pity and sinks his teeth into the back of his head!
Robin brought me a vinyl Gloomy from London, and he's brilliant - he's got blood splashes all over him, and red plastic blood dripping from his mouth.
Gloomy is designed by Mori Chack, and has become a major franchise in Japan, much like Hello Kitty - but darker. He's the Hello Kitty for a generation that can now see the world clearly as a pretty dark place, where not everything works out the way you planned it. He's sitting next to my bed at the moment :o)

funny bunny dunny
Another vinyl toy collection I've started is the dunny. This unsuspecting little guy looks a little like a bunny rabbit in form, and like nothing on earth once a designer has been let loose on it. They come in little sealed foil bags, so you never know which one you're getting - it's always a surprise, and always a little scary incase you get the same guy you already have (there aren't exactly loads of collectors to swap with in sa). Imagine my excitement when out of my christmas stocking tumbled a little box I recognised. And it was different from the two i Have! So meet new dunny - robber in the middle there, who's head reads "I get mines the fast way..."
The bird nest dunny on the left is designed by CW, the robber by Mishka, and the hello dunny by Huck Gee.

'TOKIDOKI means "sometimes" in Japanese. I chose a Japanese word because I love Japan.
I love everything from the ultra modern happy face of Shibuya to the serious magic silence of Kyoto. I chose "sometimes" because everyone waits for moments that change one's destiny. By simple chance or meeting a new person, tokidoki is the hope, the hidden energy everyone has inside that gives us the strength to face a new day and dream something positive, that something magical will happen to us.'
I know I've mentioned tokidoki before, but I really do admire this designer. And he's just growing and growing. On the site today: shoes (!!!), watches and the new moofia range!

melancholy death of oyster boy and other stories
While shopping around San Fran, we came across Tim Burton's "tragic toys". Robin immediately knew I'd love them, but we weren't sure where they were from. Tim Burton has written a series of tales and poems called The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories. In true Tim Burton style, the stories are a little macabre, a little sad, a lot quirky and each quite tragic. But they're also quite beautiful, and the characters lovable. As are the illustrations that go with them."There once was a girl
who was made up of junk.
She looked really dirty,
and she smelled like a skunk.
She was always unhappy,
or in one of her slumps-perhaps 'cause she spent
so much time down in the dumps.
The only bright moment
was from a guy named Stan.
